• The United Service Academies are federal academies for the undergraduate education and training of commissioned officers for the United Armed Forces.  There are Five U.S. Service Academies:

    • United States Military Academy (USMA) in West Point, NY, founded in 1802
    • United States Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis, MD, founded in 1845
    • United States Air Force Academy, (USAFA) in Colorado Springs, CO, founded in 1954
    • United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) in New London, CT, founded in 1876
    • United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in Kings Point, NY, founded in 1943

    Nominations

    All applicants, except for the USCGA, are required to obtain a nomination to the academies.  Nominations may be made by Congressional Representatives, Senators, the Vice President, and the President.  MCJROTC units are eligible to nominate three candidates each year.  Units that earn Naval Honor School distinction are eligible to nominate an additional three candidates.  Students must be currently be in the unit and past participation does not qualify.

    Cost

    If accapted, you will receive a free education, including room and board, medical and dental, and a monthly stipend.  This elite education, estimated value at more than $280,000, is fully paid for by the federal government, which means you graduate with no student loans to pay and zero debt while earning a paid salary.  

    Service commitment

    Graduates from the service academies earn a direct commission as a Second Lieutenant or Ensign and must servie a minim term of duty, usually five years.
