    April Colen
    Assistant Principal

My name is April Colen and it is my pleasure to introduce myself as your Assistant Principal.  I have been an educator for over 20 years and have found my passion in middle school.  It is during this time that students develop a sense of identity and autonomy, which makes it crucial that we take care to nurture, support, and challenge them.

I attended Cal State Dominguez Hills where I obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education while being a student-athlete on the womens soccer team.  I earned a Teaching Credential and Master of Arts degree in Cross Cultural Teaching from National University.  I continued my education in obtaining my Administrative Credential from Cal State Dominguez Hills and a Master of Science degree in Restorative Practices from the International Institute for Restorative Practices.  During my educational journey I discovered my passion for supporting and witnessing students achieving at all levels and building relationships with students and families.

My teaching career began in the Los Angeles Unified School District where I was a Physical Education teacher for over 13 years.  My introduction to the ³ÉÈËÊÓƵ came when I joined the Truman family as the Dean of Student Support.  I later transitioned to a Climate and Culture Specialist in the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support department.  I have been thrilled to rejoin the Truman family as the Assistant Principal!

I am eager to listen and learn from students, families, and staff.  Through my educational experiences, I’ve learned that communication with all stakeholders is key to our students’ success.  I strive to bring that spirit of collaboration as I build relationships with the entire Truman community.

Please know that my door is always open.  I look forward to learning and growing with our amazing students, dedicated staff, and supportive families and community.
