Meet Our Mascot: PJ the Steelerman
At Fontana High School, we proudly embrace our mascot, the Steelerman, a tribute to the hardworking steelworkers who once formed the backbone of our community. The name “Steeler” is short for steelworker, reflecting Fontana’s rich history as home to Kaiser Steel, the largest steel mill west of the Mississippi River. When our school opened in 1952, many of the town’s residents earned their livelihoods from the mill, making the choice of the Steelers as our mascot a fitting homage to the blue-collar spirit of our community.
Over the years, the Steelerman has evolved but continues to embody the strength and resilience of a steelworker, complete with a hardhat and a strong jawline. In 2022, we began referring to our mascot as “PJ” in honor of Paul Jamerson. As a student, Paul was the first to don the hardhat and overalls, proudly calling himself “the Steelerman.” Later, as a beloved faculty member, Mr. Jamerson frequently wore the iconic outfit, continuing to inspire school spirit and pride.
PJ the Steelerman stands as a symbol of our school’s enduring legacy and the hardworking ethos of our community. Go Steelers!
