³ÉÈËÊÓƵ Students Recognized for Excellence in Academic Decathlon

FONTANA, CA – Kaiser High School junior Ashley Munayco, sophomore David Aguilar and their teammates battled against 46 teams from 24 schools in a two-day Academic Decathlon event, triumphing with medals in four subjects and a third-place trophy in speech. 

Academic Decathlon tests student knowledge in speech, interview, math, science, literature, economics, social studies, music and art; the event includes a final Super Quiz encompassing all subjects. Kaiser took varsity and junior varsity teams to the competition, held Jan. 26 and Feb. 2, and earned medals in speech, math, music and interview skills. 

“The Academic Decathlon is more than just mastering an academic subject. It helps in other aspects of life such as public speaking,” said Munayco, who competed with the varsity team. 

Munayco and Aguilar were the two highest scoring students for their respective teams and each received a trophy in recognition of their hard work. 

“This is only the third year since Kaiser has brought back Academic Decathlon to compete in the county-wide event,” said Megan Perez, Kaiser’s Academic Decathlon coach and AP Human Geography teacher. “The highlight of the awards banquet was celebrating the individual achievements of our students and receiving a team trophy for speech, as it our first trophy since revitalizing the program.”
