FONTANA, CA – Canyon Crest Elementary School students acted as cultural ambassadors, welcoming a student group from the Baijiazhuang Primary School of Beijing in February.

Canyon Crest hosted 23 Baijiazhuang fourth- and fifth-grade students from Feb. 12-14, engaging them in numerous activities in the classroom, on the playground and in the cafeteria, including exchanging Valentine’s Day cards.

Canyon Crest partner Engineering for Kids performed an after-school robotics lesson, part of several science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) activities the students engaged in, including a spaghetti tower marshmallow challenge in the school’s makerspace lab. Baijiazhuang students performed dances and piano recitals for their new classmates, while Canyon Crest students showed a video clip of a music performance at the California Theater of the Performing Arts in San Bernardino.

This is the fourth year Canyon Crest has hosted students and administrators from China, through a cultural exchange program hosted by the American Education Federation.

“Our students just love the international visits, which introduce them to customs and traditions that they have only read about or seen on the computer,” Canyon Crest Principal Kelly Wilbert said. “Our students are learning at an early age the value of diversity and acceptance, which will serve them well as they develop into future leaders.”

Canyon Crest was recently named a 21st Century Learning Exemplar School for its commitment to helping students acquire skills needed to succeed in the modern workforce.
